The model never showed up. The girl didn’t know if she had just left them there to be stranded or if something had happened. The guest was concerned that she had car trouble or something.
The couple ended up stuck at the Flying J for 5 days. The days blurred together and the girl was so scared. They didn’t have money for anything including food. They were lucky at points when someone gave them food or someone would leave something behind and they were able to eat. The girl had saved a cup and could keep drinking ice water so that helped.
The couple spent their days trying to figure out what to do about their situation. The girl ended up reading a book a friend had loaned to her about a year before that was sitting in the RV and she also watched her first Nascar race from the beginning to the end. This was the Talledega race which is usually one of the more exciting races. She saw lots of crashes.
The guest kept insisting to the girl that they were not that far from their destination. The girl finally gave in and begged her mother to send her money. She was getting desperate and worried. The couple had now been gone from her home for almost 2 weeks and she was afraid of not being able to get things accomplished and get home.
Her mother figured out a way to wire her money. She picked up the money and was so excited to get to their destination. The couple had a good breakfast and got ready to head out. Then the guest recounted the money they had and told the girl that they still didn’t have the money to get to their destination. How was that possible? Somewhere they should have been days before and the fact that the money they had originally started out with should have been enough to get them to their destination.
The girl could never explain why she couldn’t just leave the guest at this point except that she was afraid of being alone and she didn’t realize how easy it would have been for her to get home. Later on she found out that she was right off of I-15 and could have just driven north from where they were and gotten home with enough money. Not the whole way with the money they had but she could have headed that way.
That evening she was exhausted and frustrated. The one bright spot in that day was that she had met a hitch hiker that was pagan. They had a good conversation and she thought about how many times so far she had run into pagans. It seemed that they were just attracted to one another again.
The guest pulled her aside and told her his brilliant idea. He had decided it would be best to try to make their way east toward Florida. He said he was sure he could get drivers to help us out and figure things out. They took the money they had left, put it in the gas tank and headed east.
