They spent the night in the motel waiting for the phone call that would tell them to get a ride to the airport. The guest’s phone never rang, not even once. The next day the girl called an old friend and begged him to help her get the room for another night. She was so surprised when he said he would do it. They hadn’t even been in contact in years. It made her think that there were still people out there who trusted her. She had begun to doubt this since she had so many friends tell her they had given up on her.
Orion was still with them at this point. The girl was so proud of him. He was listening to her so well by this time that he didn’t even need a leash. It had only been about a month but he listened to his mommy so well and she was very proud of him. He was the sweetest dog. The girl had made sure that she was going to be able to take him on the jet. She didn’t want to lose him.
They all spent that day waiting for the confirmation about the airplane. No calls came again. Finally the guest tried calling his friend Barry. Barry should have been going to Rolex himself and lived in South Carolina. The guest got in touch with him. Barry apologized for not calling before about getting the girl home for the funeral. He had some story about his girlfriend breaking her leg and them going to the ER and getting distracted. The guest told him that was okay but they now needed help getting to Rolex. Barry told him that he was leaving for Rolex the next day and was willing to come get them on his way.
Barry was supposed to pick them up the next day before check out time. It started getting closer and closet to check out time. They were all out of money by this time and didn’t know what to do. They finally decided the only thing they could do was to appeal to the manager to leave Orion at the motel with all their stuff promising to return. They all walked to a local truck stop in the freezing cold.
They discussed their options and both Sam and the girl got on the phone and called anyone they could. Finally Sam got in touch with someone who was willing to loan him some money. They picked up the money and headed back to the motel.
While they were gone Orion had gotten sick. They didn’t know if he had eaten something bad or what had happened. The guest and the girl cleaned it up the best they could. They all settled down to wait for Barry’s phone call. Another day ended up passing with no call from Barry.
The next day the manager asked them if they would move to another room. They packed up all their stuff and moved to the other room. After housekeeping had been in their previous room, they were told that Orion could no longer stay with them. The 3 of them then had to decide what to do about Orion.
They didn’t know what to do about the puppy. They knew they would be evicted if they tried to keep him hidden. He was a dog for heaven’s sake. He needed to go outside and run around. There was no way for them to hide him. They finally decided the only thing to do with him would be to try taking him for a walk and try to lose him.
The girl spent that night in mourning. She couldn’t even love on Orion because it was breaking her heart that they were going to have to get rid of him. He kept trying to come to her and she had to keep telling him, “Orion mommy loves you but she can’t love on you right now.” It was the saddest she ever remembered being.
The next day the girl took Orion out walking and tried to lose him while they were walking. She would get so far away from him and he would just find her again. He was just too attuned to her. Then the guest tried putting him over the fence hoping that would do it. A couple of hours later he showed up back on the doorstep. He knew where he was and where his mommy was. He just wouldn’t stay away. Finally, Sam and the girl walked for a mile hoping that they could find a way to leave him behind. They also thought that maybe it they got to the truck stop he would be confused with the truck smells and also maybe a truck driver would pick him up. The entire time they tried to ignore Orion. He would run across the street and every time the girl would cringe thinking he would be hit by a car. He never did. He kept coming right back to them. The girl was almost in tears of frustration. What were they going to do with him? Eventually they finally found a way to lose him but the girl never forgot and would forever wonder if he was okay. She felt like a horrible human for having to lose the dog in the first place.
